Residence programme

The Artist in Residence programme at MAP offers emerging artists time, space, and support to focus on creative development. Residencies are designed to encourage experimentation, reflection, and the testing of new ideas within a shared creative environment.

Artists in Residence are invited to engage with the wider MAP community and may present their work through exhibitions, open studios, talks, or workshops. Residencies are flexible and responsive, supporting a range of practices and approaches.

OPEN CALL…

  • MAP invites applications for a self-funded Artist in Residence (AIR) taking place over four weeks. This residency is open to emerging artists seeking dedicated time and space to develop and present new work within a public-facing gallery environment.

The MAP Residency programme supports self-directed artistic development, experimentation, and presentation. The residency is non-prescriptive, allowing artists to focus on research, testing, or production, culminating in a short exhibition outcome. Artists will have full access to the gallery space throughout the residency, enabling an immersive and sustained engagement with their project.

The selected artist will work within the MAP Projects gallery, engaging with the wider MAP community and situating their practice within an active creative context. The residency concludes with a one-week exhibition and opening event, offering public visibility and professional presentation of the work developed during the residency period.

Self-funded residencies at MAP are offered to ensure the long-term sustainability of the program. This model allows us to provide consistent access to space and professional presentation while being transparent about costs and limitations.

  • The residency comprises:

    • Four-week residency

    • 24/7 access to the M.A.P Projects gallery space

    • 32sqm gallery space with natural daylight and access to shared balcony

    • Public opening event hosted by M.A.P Projects

    • Promotion through M.A.P’s website, mailing list, and social channels

    • Professional support and liaison from the M.A.P Projects team

  • MAP offers self-funded residencies at a fee of $1,100, supporting access to the space and the sustainability of the programme.

Where exhibitions result in sales, a reduced 10% commission applies, with artists retaining 90% of all sales.

  • This residency is open to emerging artists working across all disciplines. Applicants should be able to demonstrate how the residency period would support the development of their practice and how they intend to use the gallery space across the four weeks.
